The Mara Legend
The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli (1781)

The original idea for this story led me to the Nordic legend of the mara or mare. The mara is described in Scandinavian folklore as a being who would sit on the chest of a sleeping person and bring them nightmares. The story originates from the Norse Ynglinga saga, a 13h century legendary saga written by Snorri Sturlson, an Icelandic poet. In the saga King Vanlandi Sveigoisson of Uppsala is killed by a mara which conjured by the Finnish sorceress Huld, hired by the king’s abandoned wife. From there, the legend starts to appear across European folklore from Germany to Poland to Romania to Turkey. If you’re interested in learning more about the mara legend follow the links below:
